The answer is now the destination

When a buyer asks ChatGPT which SEO agency to use, or Google puts an AI Overview above the results, the click you were competing for may never happen. Being ranked and being cited have become different problems.

This is not a reason to panic, and it is certainly not a reason to abandon SEO — the systems generating those answers are reading the same web, and they overwhelmingly cite pages that rank. But the qualities that get a page cited are more specific than the ones that get it ranked.

Generated answers favour pages that state a clear claim early, attribute it to someone, put numbers in plain text rather than in an image, and describe an entity consistently everywhere it appears. That is work, and most sites have done none of it.

Six things we actually change

Crawler access

The first thing we check, and it fails more often than you would expect. If your robots.txt or your CDN blocks retrieval crawlers, you are invisible to AI answers regardless of how good the page is. We audit access per bot and per path.

Entity clarity

One sentence describing who you are, used identically on your homepage, your about page, your schema description and every directory profile. Consistency is what lets a model resolve you as an entity rather than a string.

Answer-first structure

The claim in the first sentence, the caveat in the second, the detail after. Headings phrased as the questions buyers ask. Numbers in text, dates visible, units stated.

Structured data

A connected schema graph rather than disconnected blobs, so Organization, WebPage, Service, Article, Person and FAQ nodes reference each other and describe one coherent thing.

Citable assets

Original data, comparison tables and pricing pages get cited because they answer something nothing else answers. Opinion pieces do not. We build the former.

Off-site consistency

Models weigh corroboration. If your address, founding date, service list and positioning differ across your site, LinkedIn, Clutch and Justdial, you have taught the model to be unsure about you.

AEO, GEO, LLMO — what the terms mean

The vocabulary is a mess because the field is eighteen months old. Here is how we use the words, so we are at least consistent.

TermWhat it usually meansIs it a separate discipline?
SEOEarning visibility in search results — the whole field.Yes, and it still contains everything below.
AEO — answer engine optimisationFormatting content so it can be lifted as a direct answer, in a snippet or a generated response.No. It is a content-structure discipline inside SEO.
GEO — generative engine optimisationGetting named and cited inside AI-generated answers.Partly. The tactics overlap heavily with technical SEO and PR.
LLMO / LLM SEOUsually a rebrand of the two above by someone selling a course.No.
If an agency tells you AI search needs a completely separate budget and a completely separate team, ask them which of the six workstreams above they think is new.

How we measure something that sends no click

You cannot manage this from analytics alone, because a citation with no click leaves no trace in GA4. So we build the measurement by hand.

Monthly

A prompt log, run consistently

Thirty buying-intent prompts, run across four platforms, the same way every month. We record whether you are named, which page is cited, and who is named instead of you. It is manual, and it is the only reliable signal available today.

Monthly

Competitor citation share

The same thirty prompts tell you who owns the answer space in your category. That number moving is the closest thing to a ranking report this channel has.

Continuous

Referral and brand signals

Assistant referrals in analytics where they exist, plus branded search volume — when people start hearing your name from an AI, they search for it directly.

Quarterly

Crawler access re-audit

Bot lists change and CDN rules get edited. We re-check access every quarter, because going invisible is silent.

  • That we can make ChatGPT recommend you. Nobody can guarantee a model’s output.
  • That there is a hidden technical trick. There is not; there is entity hygiene and genuinely citable content.
  • That AI search has replaced organic search. Organic still sends the overwhelming majority of qualified traffic for almost every business we work with.
  • That the tools selling “AI visibility scores” are measuring anything stable yet. We run the prompt log by hand for exactly that reason.

Our honest position: this work is cheap insurance and a genuine early-mover advantage, and it is mostly the same work that makes you rank well anyway. Buy it as a component of an SEO programme, not as a separate product at a premium.

AI search FAQs

Should we block AI crawlers to protect our content?

That is a real strategic choice, not an obvious one. Blocking training crawlers protects your material from being absorbed into a model; blocking retrieval crawlers removes you from the answers buyers are reading right now. Our default is to allow retrieval and let you decide on training, and the theme this site runs on makes that a setting rather than a code change.

Do AI Overviews actually cost us traffic?

On informational queries, often yes. On commercial ones the effect is smaller, because buyers still want to compare providers themselves. The practical response is to make sure your commercial pages are strong enough to be the click that still happens, and your informational pages are structured to be the citation.

How long does this take to show up?

Faster than classical SEO for citations — entity and structure fixes can change whether you are named within weeks. Slower for the underlying authority, because models corroborate against the same signals search engines use.

Is this included in normal plans?

Entity work, structured data and answer-first formatting are part of every plan because they are just good SEO. The monthly prompt log and citation-share tracking start at the Growth plan, or you can buy the one-off AI visibility audit.
