Small business SEO should be boring, cheap and focused on one thing

Enquiries. Not traffic, not rankings, not a content calendar with forty blog posts you will never write.

The most common way a small business wastes money on SEO is buying the enterprise version of it: a blog programme, a large keyword list and a monthly report full of impressions. Six months later there is more traffic and the same number of phone calls.

What actually works for a business under about twenty people is narrow: get the Business Profile right, build five or six pages that match how people search for what you sell, collect reviews properly, and fix the technical faults that stop any of it counting. Then stop.

The six-month plan we actually run

Month 1

Foundations and profile

Technical audit and the fixes that matter. Google Business Profile completed properly — category, services, hours, photos, description. Tracking set up so we can tell a phone call from a form fill.

Month 2

The money pages

One page per thing you sell, written to answer the question a buyer actually asks, with your prices or your price range on them. This is usually where the first enquiries come from.

Month 3

Reviews and citations

A review-request habit built into how you already speak to customers, plus the directories that still matter in your sector. Not five hundred of them. About fifteen.

Months 4–5

The questions

Three or four pieces answering what people ask before they buy — cost, timeline, comparison, what goes wrong. These convert far better than general blog posts.

Month 6

Review and decide

We look at what enquiries came from where, and decide honestly whether to continue, reduce to maintenance, or stop. Plenty of small businesses should move to maintenance, and we will say so.

What you should do yourself

Genuinely — these are free, take an afternoon each, and no agency should charge you for them.

  • Claim and complete your Google Business Profile. Every field. It is the highest-return hour you will spend.
  • Ask your last twenty happy customers for a review, individually, by name. Not a bulk email.
  • Write down the ten questions customers ask you on the phone. That is your content plan.
  • Put your prices, or a range, on the website. The enquiries you lose were never going to buy.
  • Add your real address and phone to the footer, in the same format everywhere.

If you do those five things and nothing else, you will beat most of your local competitors. Hire an agency when you have done them and want the next tier — or when you genuinely have no time, which is a perfectly good reason.

What it costs, and when it is not worth it

Our Starter plan is ₹25,000 a month and it covers one location and one city properly. Below about ₹15,000 a month, nobody can do real SEO work — the market rate for a competent person’s time does not allow it, so what you are buying is automated reporting and low-grade links.

And there is a threshold below which you should not buy SEO at all. If a new customer is worth ₹2,000 to you and you close one in ten enquiries, ₹25,000 a month needs to produce more than 125 extra enquiries to pay for itself. That is a lot. We will run that arithmetic with you before you sign, using the calculator below.

What would an uplift actually be worth?

Move the sliders to your own numbers. The model is deliberately conservative and shows its working.

extra revenue a month, once the uplift is in

Month 1 to 12 — SEO compounds, so the first quarter is the quiet one.

Extra sessions a month Extra customers a month Revenue over 12 months Retainer over 12 months Net, and return ·

This is a model, not a forecast, and it assumes your conversion rate holds as traffic grows — which it often does not. Treat the output as the size of the prize, not a promise. We will build the real version from your Search Console and analytics data in the audit.

Small business SEO FAQs

Can I just use one of those ₹5,000 a month services?

You can, and you will get automated reports, directory submissions and possibly links that cause problems later. Nobody can pay a competent SEO for the hours real work takes at that price. Doing the five DIY items above yourself is strictly better value.

How many pages does a small business need?

Usually between six and twelve: home, one per service, about, contact, and two or three answering pre-purchase questions. Sites with sixty thin pages routinely rank worse than sites with eight good ones.

Is SEO better than Google Ads for us?

Different, not better. Ads give you enquiries this week and stop the day you stop paying. SEO takes months and then keeps working. Most small businesses we advise should run a small ads budget while SEO builds, and we will say so even though we do not sell ads.

What if it does not work?

After ninety days there is no lock-in, and we will tell you before you get there if the signals are not there. We would rather end an engagement honestly than defend it for another six months.
